Opening the Door to Early Diagnosis of Dementia: Research on Blood Biomarkers for Dementia

“It will be possible to diagnose dementia 20 years before onset.”

As life expectancies grow longer worldwide, the number of people with dementia is increasing. Dementia is a condition that can touch all of our lives — whether as patients, family members, or caregivers.

Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for about 60% to 70% of all dementia cases, is caused by the accumulation of abnormal proteins in the brain that impair nerve cells. It is believed that these changes in the brain begin more than 20 years before the appearance of symptoms. The key to early detection of Alzheimer’s disease is a new testing method called a blood biomarker, which detects little changes in protein levels in the blood.

A Sysmex employee from the Central Research Laboratories, who is responsible for developing the blood biomarker, shares her mission and commitment to tackle the social challenge of dementia through Sysmex's highly sensitive and precise measurement technology.
