For the third consecutive year, Sysmex Corporation has been awarded the highest rating of GOLD in the “Pride Index 2024”, which is an index formulated by the general incorporated association ‘work with Pride’ (hereinafter, wwP) to evaluate efforts of creating an inclusive environment related to sexual and gender minorities, such as LGBTQ+, by companies and organizations.

■ What is the Pride Index?

The Pride Index was formulated by wwP in 2016 and is the first index in Japan to evaluate LGBTQ+ policies and practices. Evaluations are carried out across five indicators: Policy (declaration of actions), Representation (community engagement), Inspiration (awareness-raising activities), Development (personnel systems and programs), and Engagement/Empowerment (social contribution and public relations activities). Based on the total score of the evaluations, a GOLD, SILVER, or BRONZE certification is awarded.

■ Sysmex’s efforts

At Sysmex, we are making efforts toward “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion,” which calls for creating a comfortable working environment that is welcoming to diverse personnel under the fair opportunity provision. Under the people-oriented policy we have adopted, we hire human resources regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, gender, age, work background, or whether they have a disability; for our sustainability targets, we have set a female manager ratio and a percentage of employees with disabilities and promote the recruitment of diverse individuals and their personal development as well as improve workplace environments.
With regard to support for sexual and gender minorities, we have implemented a partner registration system that enables us to treat a same-sex partner as equal to a spouse on the family register since FY2020. We also expressed our support for “Business for Marriage Equality (BME)”, which aims to legalize same-sex marriage in Japan (marriage equality). Additionally, we are implementing various efforts to deepen understanding about sexual and gender minorities, such as holding round table discussions on LGBTQ+ issues, providing introductory-level texts for learning about making improvements to the workplace environment from the perspective of SOGI (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity), and offering Ally stickers to express understanding and support for LGBTQ+ individuals. We have been involved in Tokyo Rainbow Pride, the biggest LGBTQ+ event in Japan since FY2022.
Going forward, we will continue to strive to foster a corporate culture that enables our diverse human resources to have a sense of unity worldwide and use their abilities to the fullest with peace of mind.
