Sysmex Wins Awards in 2018 Kinki Local Commendations for Innovations

Sysmex Corporation (HQ: Kobe, Japan; Chairman and CEO: Hisashi Ietsugu) received a Commissioner of Japan Patent Office Award and Encouragement Prizes for Inventions at the Kinki1 Local Commendation for Inventions, sponsored by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation.

In accordance with our mission, “Shaping the advancement of healthcare,” as set out in the corporate philosophy of the Sysmex Group, we work to develop new technologies for the higher-value-added products and services we provide to patients and customers.

At the 2018 Kinki Local Commendation for Inventions, Sysmex received a special award, the Commissioner of Japan Patent Office Award, for one invention that also received the Invention Implementation Achievement Award, and the Encouragement Prize for Inventions for three inventions. Local commendations for inventions, which are awarded to inventors who create superior technologies and designs and people who endeavor to put such inventions to practical application, have a history dating back to 1921.

Going forward, Sysmex aims to reduce the burden on patients and contribute to increases in the quality of testing. At the same time, we aim to develop superior technologies that instill customers with confidence.


Our Award-Winning Inventions

(1) Special award: Commissioner of Japan Patent Office Award

Submitted Invention: Method for Accurately and Simply Classifying and Counting Leukocytes (Patent Registration Number: 5600726)
Recipients: Tatsuya Narikawa, Tomohiro Tsuji, Keiko Moriyama, Yuji Itose, Shinichiro Oguni, Ayumu Yoshida, Saori Otsuka, Toshihiro Mizukami

This invention relates to a method for simply and accurately classifying and counting leukocytes in the blood.

This invention uses an acidic hemolytic agent and a fluorescent staining solution to denature and stain blood cells. Light is then applied to the cells, and the leukocytes are classified and counted based on information from the forward scattered light and side fluorescent light.

This invention enables the simple and accurate classification and counting of leukocytes without being affected by nucleated erythrocytes and the debris, which have information similar to that of leukocytes. As a result, the invention has contributed substantially to increasing the efficiency of clinical laboratory technologists and the early detection of blood diseases related to leukocytes.

This invention is used on Automated Hematology Analyzer XN-Series and the specialized reagents used with this series, the Lysercell™ WNR and Fluorocell™ WNR.

In addition to the special award, this invention also received the “Invention Implementation Achievement Award,” which is given to the representatives of companies recognized for their outstanding achievements in practical applications.

(2) Encouragement Prize for Invention

1) Submitted Invention: Urinalysis Testing System for Increasing Testing Efficiency (Patent Registration Number: 6110445)
Recipients: Nobuyoshi Yamakawa, Hiroo Tatsutani, Yuichiro Omae

This invention relates to a urinalysis testing system for the early-stage detection of kidney and urinary tract diseases and the assumption of abnormal locations. By appropriately dividing urine samples among multiple analyzers, the invention allows urine testing to be performed with high efficiency even in cases where large quantities of samples, numbering into the hundreds, are being processed.

This invention is used in urinalysis testing systems in combination with the Fully Automated Urine Chemistry Analyzer UC-3500, the Fully Automated Urine Particle Analyzer UF-5000/4000/3000 and the Fully Automated Urine Particle Digital Imaging Device UD-10.

2) Submitted Invention: Hematology Analyzer Containing a Compact Photodetector (Patent Registration Number: 5877810)
Recipients: Takeshi Yamamoto, Seiichiro Tabata

This invention relates to a hematology analyzer, which is used to classify and count leukocytes, erythrocytes and other cells in the blood. By concentrating on an analyzer’s optical detector, the invention helps make hematology analyzers more compact through the use of an optical detector that includes an aspheric lens to make the optical path length of the forward-scattered light optics shorter than with conventional models.

This invention is used in the Automated Hematology Analyzer XN-L Series.

3) Submitted Invention: Cuvette for Enhancing the Specimen Agitation Function (Patent Registration Number: 4018131)
Recipients: Norimasa Yamamoto, Nobuhiro Kitagawa, Takeshi Yamato

This invention relates to a cuvette used in hemostasis. The invention involves the formation of a non-circular shape on the inside of the cuvette’s opening side and a circular inside shape on the bottom side to increase the agitation function compared with conventional cuvettes.

This invention is used in cuvettes employed with the Automated Blood Coagulation Analyzer CS-Series.
