Our pledge as a leading healthcare company-Creating valuable testing and diagnostic technologies to support the lives and health of people the world over, and building the strong trust and confidence of our stakeholders.

Renewing our founding principles to seek new possibilities

Fiscal 2008 marked a major milestone for Sysmex. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of our founding, we undertook a series of colorful projects, including the announcement of a new brand, the opening of our new R&D core Technopark, a suggestion drive with the participation of all of our employees, the “VQ (Value Quest) Session,” and public events at Technopark. On each of these occasions we were privileged to meet many of our stakeholders in person. These experiences led us to gain a renewed appreciation for their continued support, for which we cannot be grateful enough.

Established to coincide with our 40th anniversary, our new corporate logo includes our founding mission of “building trust and confidence to people” and our aspirations for the future, namely, to become a “frontrunner which shapes the future of healthcare using advanced technology.” We also established the new corporate message, “We Believe the Possibilities.” True to this message, Sysmex promises to constantly build up trust and confidence by providing a link between advanced technologies and people’s health, while holding a firm conviction in what we do.

Seeking solutions to challenges in healthcare

Contributing to the promotion of people’s health and the development of healthcare-I believe that this is the single most important responsibility that Sysmex needs to fulfill. The global healthcare environment is making steady progress, but there still remain many issues which need to be addressed. In advanced countries like Japan, the U.S.A., and the countries of Europe, improving the quality of life (QOL) of individual patients of cancer, diabetes, etc. is urgently needed, as populations age rapidly and lifestyle-related diseases run rampant. Moreover, expectations are running high for “preventive healthcare” and “disease management” on the back of surging medical expenses. In emerging countries in Asia and other regions, on the other hand, populations and economies are growing fast, which in turn is widening the inter-regional gap in levels of social security and healthcare infrastructures. In developing countries in Africa and elsewhere, there still remain many districts where people do not have access to adequate healthcare. In these regions, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other serious infectious diseases are widespread. There is also rising concern over the outbreak of “pandemic influenza,” which it is feared will spread throughout the world.

Sysmex is working on solutions to these issues through its business undertakings and social contributions. In Europe and Japan, for instance, we developed a system for rapid detection of breast cancer lymph node metastasis, successive marketing of which began in 2006. In emerging countries in Asia, we provide assistance in the development of healthcare infrastructures by promoting standardization of hematological testing and holding academic seminars, in support of their efforts to narrow the inter-regional gap in healthcare services. In developing countries in Africa and other regions, we donate hematology systems to local healthcare facilities to spread healthcare services and eliminate HIV/AIDS. We also support the training of local healthcare professionals in order to improve the level of clinical testing techniques there. As for the battle against pandemic influenza, we have set avian flu viruses as our main target, dedicating ourselves to the development of testing techniques and products that we hope will help to prevent infections from spreading further.

Fulfilling our responsibility as a manufacturer for conservation of the global environment

Sysmex also considers involvement in local communities and conservation of the global environment as key elements of our corporate responsibility.

Sysmex conducts a variety of activities in healthcare and many other fields as a part of its commitment to local communities, including participation in the Kobe Medical Industry Development Project, which is promoted by the city of Kobe. The scope of such activities is expanding across the globe, as we offer proactive support to affected areas of major earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters by inspecting their testing instruments and donating products.

We are addressing the need to conserve the global environment on the recognition that it is one of the most pressing issues of our times. In fiscal 2008, the total amount of our greenhouse gas emissions increased as our production expanded and the site of our R&D center was extended. On the other hand, we made major achievements in our drive to reduce waste and promote recycling at our factories.

In May 2009, we established a new Sysmex environmental policy, in which we make a clear commitment to focus on environmental stress reduction at each step of the product lifecycle from design and production to sale, use, and disposal. As a “manufacturing business,” we will expedite environmental activities by creating environmental technology within the product development process and bringing about innovations in the production process.

Bringing out the best in our employees

Sysmex’s employees are the most important resource of the company. Indeed, the creation of a work environment where everyone can develop their skills and give them full play is one of the most important responsibilities of the company. It was in line with this belief that in April 2009 we opened Sysmex Kids Park, an in-house daycare center, as a part of Technopark.

Another initiative we have taken in this regard is the “VQ Session,” which intends to feed back employees’ suggestions to management. Our employees from around the world contributed a large amount of suggestions on new business opportunities, social contributions, and environmental conservation, thereby successfully revitalizing the entire Group. An opportunity for our employees from different affiliations and different regions to engage in discussions on common topics, the VQ Session also helped us to share knowledge and diversity within the Group.

Under the new corporate message, “We Believe the Possibilities,” we will continue making efforts to achieve sustainable development of the Group and our host communities, while holding on to a firm belief in our potential.

We would like to ask our stakeholders for their continued support and generous understanding of all of our endeavors.
