Plans and Achievements

FY2008 Environmental Actions: Plans and Achievements

Function Projects Achievements in FY2008
Environmental
management
Strengthening of management
  • A new Environmental Policy has been established in order to make greater efforts toward environmental conservation throughout the entire product life cycle (product planning, design/development, procurement, production, logistics, sales and support). Accordingly, a promotion structure for the Environmental Management Committee has been revised (April 2009).
Strengthening of programs to
assess and prevent
environmental risks
  • Reviewed contingency manuals and made them thoroughly known
  • Conducted emergency drills on effluent treatment and waste at the Kakogawa Factory
  • Decided to introduce the latest effluent treatment facilities to the Ono Factory over the next three years. Introduction begun. Briefings provided to government
  • Tightened surveillance and countermeasures against effluent leakage from underground installations at the Seishin and Ono Factories
  • Trained R&D staff on global trends of environmental regulations
Product
development
Compliance with the RoHS
Directive*1
  • In anticipation of regulations on in vitro diagnostic devices taking effect, made continued efforts to have new products comply with the RoHS Directive*1
Compliance with REACH*2
  • Set up a project team to conduct a survey on the use of restricted substances
  • Substitution of restricted substances being promoted
  • Established regulations restricting the use of substances with environmental impact in the design stage
Recycling
  • As a part of the continued response to the WEEE Directive, conducted surveys to investigate the materials and weights of instruments
  • Set up standards of recycling markings on reagents' containers and packaging materials which use resins. Design based on the standards continued
Development of materials to
substitute for human- and
animal-derived materials
  • Developed and launched coagulation reagent Thrombocheck TTO Recombinant, which substitutes animal-derived materials by using a recombinant made from silkworm-derived protein
Energy/resource conservation
  • Continued design and development in such a way that reduces products’ power consumption, weight, and effluent
    • - Reduced power consumption of mainstay products by more than 20% (vs. FY2004)
    • - Reduced weight of mainstay products by more than 15% (vs. FY2004)
    • - Reduced effluent from mainstay products by more than 15% (vs. FY2004)
  • Continued reducing the amount used of metallic, non-metallic, and resin materials by improving design of instruments
Production Promotion of "zero" emissions
at factories
  • Promoting “zero” emissions at the three factories. The recycling rate increased by seven percentage points to 98.5% (Kakogawa: 100.0%, Seishin: 99.6%, Ono: 95.2%)
  • Continued improving and increasing the efficiency of operations and separating waste for reduced gross discharge of waste at the Seishin and Ono Factories
Tighter control of chemical
substances
  • Reduced PRTR-restricted substances by approx. 20% by increasing manufacturing process efficiency at the Ono Factory
  • Another round of simulated drills conducted on the handling of chemicals at the Kakogawa Factory
Procurement Promotion of green procurement
  • Completed extended application of the Green Procurement Standards to a subsidiary (Sysmex RA Co., Ltd.)
Promotion of environmental activities with suppliers
  • Established standards of supplier selection and evaluation which include requirements on quality and environmental conservation
  • Continued supporting suppliers in introducing an environmental management system
Logistics CO2Monitoring and reduction of
CO2 emissions
  • Calculated environmental effect from the introduction of natural gas vehicles(approx. 0.3t of CO2reduced per year)
  • Installed stand-by power sources for refrigerator cars within factory premises (for switching off the engine while parking)
Weight reduction of packing
materials
  • Reduced weight of HISCL immunoassay analyzer’s packing materials by approx. 35%
Promotion of eco-logistics
  • Conducted questionnaires on the environment with shipping companies. Promoted a campaign to facilitate communications
  • Continued raising shipping companies’ awareness of eco-logistics
Sales and support Proper disposal of waste
  • Made arrangements for on-site inspection at contract waste disposal services
  • Set up standards on proper disposal and volume reduction of waste from branch offices and sales offices
Offices Reduction in paper, garbage,
and electric power consumption
  • Completed construction of the eco-friendly Technopark (opened October 1)
  • Promoted the drive to print less, "paper-less meetings," and recycling of paper for reducing printing paper consumption
  • In order to reduce electric power consumption at offices, we also ensure that lights are out when not in use, and that room temperature is controlled properly. Promoted “cool biz” summer dress code
Environmental
communication
Issuance of environmental reports
  • Published CSR Report 2008
  • Planted trees on the premise of Technopark with contributions from employees
  • Kicked off a “CO2 reduction of 1kg 1day 1person” project. Planned and promoted programs which involve all of the employees

*1 RoHS Directive: Bans the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to be placed on the EU market. It demands a total ban of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium) and specified bromine flame retardants (PBB, PBDE), which can cause dioxins.

*2 REACH: Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. Requires all companies manufacturing or importing chemical substances into the European Union in quantities of one ton or more per year to investigate the impact on humankind and the global environment and apply for and register these substances with the new European Chemicals Agency.
