Immunochromatography is a technology that uses a combination of capillary action and latex agglutination. When the liquid sample is dropped on a membrane containing the antibody-coated colored latex particles, it migrates through the membrane by capillary action. The antigen in the sample forms an immunocomplex when it comes into contact with the antibody-coated latex particles. This immunocomplex moves within the membrane along with the liquid sample, and generates a colored line when it reacts with another antibody fixed to the indicator part of the membrane. Rapid assessment is possible because the liquid migrates through the membrane very fast. Sysmex combined this technology with antibodies specific to Influenza Type A and Type B viruses, developed by the company, to produce influenza detection kits. Influenza A and B can be rapidly identified by the simple procedure of dropping a sample on to the reagent cartridge (See Fig below). |
