Information contained in the press release is

In October 2008, Sysmex Corporation (HQ: Kobe, Japan; President: Hisashi Ietsugu) will open Technopark, a new research and development center created by an approximately two-fold expansion of the Techno Center, its former R&D center.
For an R&D-oriented firm such as ours, technology is the wellsprings of the value provided to customers. In light of the rising importance of the role played by testing in medical services, we are going to accelerate our research and development activities at Technopark in order to furnish our customers with testing and diagnostic techniques that are advanced and endowed with a high value.

In many developed countries, populations are aging, and cancer and lifestyle diseases are growing into major issues of concern to society as a whole. Initiatives to rationalize medical institutions and make their management more efficient in order to curtail medical costs are becoming key tasks. Meanwhile, the emphasis in medical services is shifting from treatment to prevention. In this environment, the role of testing, which largely determines the quality and efficiency of medical services, is assuming even more importance.

Sysmex is striving to create advanced, high-value testing and diagnostic techniques in the healthcare field centering on diagnostics. In line with the concept of "disease management," we are applying the latest technologies in the life science field in our activities for research and development of new testing and diagnostic techniques, in disease areas including hematology and immunologic diseases, infectious diseases, cancer, and chronic diseases.

Grounded in the concept of "knowledge" creation and succession, Technopark was built to serve as a hub of research and development up to global standards. Besides succeeding to the proprietary "intellectual property" accumulated by Sysmex to date, Technopark is going to collect other technologies in many different fields from around the world and fuse them with this legacy to engender new technologies of an original and forerunning nature.

On the Technopark site, which is about twice as large as that of the former Techno Center, we constructed a new R&D building equipped with the latest research facilities, such as an anechoic chamber for testing the influence of electromagnetic waves. To encourage conception from different angles and heighten creativity among researchers through contact with nature and culture, the entire grounds were transformed into a lush green park also containing a Japanese-style garden and tea house in one corner.
In addition, in the interest of promoting more communication among researchers, Technopark incorporates extensive features for stimulating interchange, as exemplified by the collaboration areas located in each facility.

Technopark also reflects concern for the environment and community. In addition to the use of eco materials and the energy-saving design, this is evidenced by landscaping for harmonization with the surrounding district. Specifically, more than half of the grounds is occupied by a natural area that contains green belts and ponds, and acts as a buffer zone between the research buildings per se and the peripheral residential area. Technopark was the first facility of its kind in the Kobe area to be awarded an "S" rating (the highest) under the Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency (CASBEE), a government-led system for rating the environmental performance of buildings.

As noted above, for Sysmex as an R&D-oriented firm, technology is the wellsprings of the value provided to our customers. We are determined to make full use of Technopark, our new R&D center, to accelerate our research and development of advanced, high-value testing and diagnostic techniques.
